Seoul 2011: Gyeongbokgung Palace

It's finally time to experience Seoul! After arriving around midnight at our guesthouse, Ann Guesthouse, and manage to get some sleep, we're going to explore the Downtown Seoul, the first destination: Gyeongbokgung Palace.

The guesthouse is directly connected to Hongik University Station - Subway Line 2, so it's very convenient for us to explore the city by subway. To reach the Gyeongbokgung Palace, you can either take the Subway Line 5 to Gwanghwamun station or Subway Line 3 to Gyeongbokgung station.

We take the first route since we only need to make one transfer from Line 2 to Line 5 at the Chungjeongno station. Go out at exit 2 of the Gwanghwamun Station and you can see King Sejong the Great statue. He was the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, and was the man who introduced Hangul as the native alphabetic system for the Korean Language.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is completed in 1395 and was used as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty. During Japanese invasions in 1592, the palace was destroyed by fire and then reconstructed in 1868. Entrance fee is KRW 3,000 for adult. Guided tour is available daily, or you can rent audio guide if you prefer to explore the palace by yourself.
